These Gomtaro APPLES saws were originally designed for pruning apple trees.
However, they have since been found to be perfect for most fruit trees with a proviso YOU MUST USE THEM IN THE CORRECT WAY.
They were designed to cut through a branch completely on one pull stroke. The teeth are finer at the end of the blade than the handle. This means that the finish of the cut is as smooth as the start. And there are no ridges caused in the cut by returning the saw to finish the cut.
The reason apple growers didn’t want ridges in the pruning cuts was to stop water collecting on the ridge and providing a haven for bacteria and fungi to gather and possibly enter into the tree as disease.
To use this saw properly, you start the cut with the handle as close to the branch as possible and pull all the way through so that the blade exits the cut and the branch falls to the ground or you are holding it in your other hand.
The blade is thinner than other Silky Saws of the same length, so you do not push them back through the cut. If you do not cut through the branch in one cut, (you should have pulled it all the way through and out of the cut, but if not) you need to remove the saw from the cut and place it back in with the handle closest to the branch and pull again.
Practice the first couple of cuts about 100mm away from the trunk so that you get the action right. Then finish off by cutting the branch close to the trunk in one pull stroke.
Design Features The blade is thin so you are not cutting much timber. (the thinner the blade the less timber you are cutting)
Progressive Teeth: There are more teeth per 30mm as you reach the end of the blade.
Ergonomically Better: Research states that pulling with pressure is ergonomically more efficient that pushing. (whatever that means) But I find it is easier and I can be more accurate using a pull saw than with a push saw. I also know that a lot of engineers and mechanics turn the blade around on the hacksaw so that it doesn’t wander off course when they use it to cut on the pull stroke.
