Gränsfors Large Carving Axe
The Gränsfors Large Carving Axe is a specialised woodworking axe designed for shaping, carving, and fine timber work. Developed in collaboration with renowned master craftsmen Wille Sundqvist and Onni Linnanheimo, this axe draws inspiration from traditional Scandinavian carving axe designs while delivering the precision and control modern woodworkers demand.
Featuring a long, curved cutting edge, the Large Carving Axe provides excellent slicing performance and control when carving bowls, spoons, furniture, and other detailed woodworking projects. The standard version comes with a double-sided edge.
The standard Large Carving Axe features a double-sided edge suitable for general carving work and users who prefer a more traditional symmetrical grind.
The handle features an uneven textured surface that improves grip and control during detailed carving tasks, especially during extended use. Hand-forged in Sweden from recycled steel and fitted with a durable hickory handle, this axe reflects the exceptional craftsmanship Gränsfors Bruk is known for.
Each axe includes a genuine vegetable-tanned leather sheath and a copy of The Axe Book.

AXE MODELS
We are often asked about what type of axe to choose. When selecting your axe, it becomes crucial to determine its intended purpose. Are you planning to use it for chopping wood in the forest or constructing a log house?
The main difference between axes is the edge. Most commonly, the edge faces the direction of travel, parallel with the handle. There are also axes where the edge is perpendicular, although these are less common. Examples include Gränsfors Bruk’s Straight Adzes and Gutter Adzes.
A typical chopper is Gränsfors Bruk’s Splitting Axe, which has quite a thin edge but a much broader and thicker poll. Therefore, This helps to split the wood apart. A prime example of a carving axe is Gränsfors Bruk’s Carpenter’s Axe. This has a long, thin and straight edge with a straight, pointed bevel face and a narrower poll, which makes it perfect for carving. The Carpenter’s Axe is not suitable for heavier work such as tree felling and log splitting. The pointed angle of the blade is not designed for that.
People today mainly use axes as tools and classify them into three groups: Forest Axes, Splitting Axes, and Log-building Axes.
